Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS)

The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS) is an autonomous organization, established by the Canadian Government in 2000. It fosters and funds scientific research on climate systems, climate change, extreme weather, air quality and marine environmental prediction. CFCAS received initial funding of $60 million to support university-based research in Canada over a six-year period, and a further $50 million was committed in the 2003 federal budget to allow the Foundation to continue its support through 2010. The Foundation encourages research partnerships and joint funding.
CFCAS research projects help increase knowledge of climate processes and predictions, provide relevant science to policy makers and improve understanding of the way weather and climate affect human health, public security and the natural environment. The research also strengthens Canada's scientific capacity. Areas include:
• Understanding key climate system processes, including greenhouse gas sources and sinks;
• Understanding key meteorological and atmospheric processes that impact on air quality;
• Improving knowledge of oceanic and atmospheric processes leading to improved marine environmental predictions;
• Understanding the probability of occurrence and improving the prediction of extreme and hazardous weather;
• Developing and improving weather, air quality and climate system models.

Researchers with faculty appointments at Canadian universities or affiliated institutions are eligible to apply for grants. Calls for grant proposals and for letters of intent for research networks are issued by the Foundation's Board of Trustees. All applications are subject to peer review. The next application deadline will be announced in the Fall of 2003.
